Combat complacency this hurricane season

Hurricane season kicks off June 1, but this week is about getting you, your family, and your property ready for what’s to come this season. National Hurricane Preparedness Week is the right time for you to get and stay prepared for one of Mother Nature’s most destructive forces.

Life by the sea can be quite pleasant – nobody enjoys the beach more than I do – but don’t forget that your family and your home are exposed to the dangers associated with coastal living. A hurricane may seem like a distant possibility, but don’t be complacent! The National Hurricane Center can keep you up-to-date on the latest storm developments with projected paths, wind speeds, storm surge and more. Nothing is more important than keeping you and your family safe!

If you’re a GEICO customer, GEICO’s Catastrophe Center is your resource for claims after the storm has passed. Ready to handle your severe weather claims needs, our teams will stay in affected areas until every claim has been resolved. And one last cautionary note: Keep a sharp eye out for fraud in the wake of any disaster, whether it is a hurricane, wildfire or tornado.

Here are a number of things you can do to make sure you’re ready when the hurricane hits:

GEICO’s a hit in Houston

Houston OfficeBy guest blogger Alex Danoff, public relations

These are truly exciting times at GEICO. After successfully launching a new office just outside of Indianapolis in 2013, GEICO held a celebratory ribbon-cutting event last month to officially open the company’s new claims operation in the greater Houston area.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who also attended GEICO’s announcement event for the Houston office in December 2013, joined Berkshire Hathaway Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett, GEICO Chairman and CEO Tony Nicely and GEICO Houston branch manager Tara Carthew as they cut the ribbon on the brand-new 138,000-square-foot facility. Many of GEICO’s partners in the community, as well as some 340 new GEICO associates, also attended the ceremony.

Will GEICO be expanding further in the future? While I don’t know of any specific plans, I wouldn’t bet against it, based on the company’s strong growth and extensive hiring efforts. I guess we’ll just have to stay tuned!

Allstate Named One of 2014 'Best Companies for Multicultural Women' by Working Mother

This release contains: 1 Photo, 1 Related Document

Allstate has been named one of the 2014 “Best Companies for Multicultural Women" by Working Mother magazine—an honor that recognizes the 25 U.S. corporations that create and use best practices in hiring, retaining and promoting women of color.

The Working Mother Research Institute has conducted the study since 2003, evaluating how multicultural women are represented at every level of management and decision making at companies that apply for inclusion on the list.

"Inclusive diversity and creating professional development opportunities for women of color continues to be a core business value for Allstate because it improves our ability to attract, retain and develop the best and brightest of our industry," said Michael Escobar, vice president, chief diversity & organization effectiveness officer for Allstate. "It also improves our ability to understand our customers better and deliver products and services they want."

Carol Evans, president of Working Mother Media, says, “The Best Companies for Multicultural Women are leaders in building an inclusive culture so that women of color can thrive and lead. We are proud of the policies and programs these winning companies support. Creating a culture of inclusion and authenticity is essential for all companies that want to have access to the top talent needed to drive their business.”

Key findings of the 2014 Working Mother report can be found on workingmother.com.

Here are some highlights:

At the 2014 Best Companies for Multicultural Women, 9% of the executives reporting directly to the CEO are women of color, up from 5% last year. Multicultural women represent 12% of the Best Companies’ top earners (defined as those among the top 20% of earners at the company); last year this number was 10%.

Representation of multicultural women at the senior manager level (8%) and corporate executive level (4%) each increased a percentage point in the past year. Multicultural women received 13% of all promotions to manager and above, down from 15% in 2013.

2014’s Best Companies employ more than 2.7 million workers with almost 32,000 worksites across 50 states in the following 7 industries: Consumer Products, Financial Services, Hospitality, Insurance, Professional Services, Retail and Technology. Multicultural women make up 20% of total employees at the Best Companies while multicultural men represent 18%.

The Working Mother Best Companies for Multicultural Women application is only available to companies that have at least 500 U.S. employees. The winners were selected based on their answers to an extensive questionnaire covering representation; hiring, attrition, and promotion rates; recruitment, retention, advancement programs; and company culture. The Working Mother Research Institute creates a scoring algorithm based on the previous year’s benchmark results to determine the winners.

Working Mother magazine reaches 2.2 million readers and is the only national magazine for career-committed mothers; 42% of our readers are multicultural women. WorkingMother.com (workingmother.com) gives working mothers @home and @work advice, solutions, and ideas. Working Mother Media, a division of Bonnier Corporation (bonnier.com), includes the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE, nafe.com), Diversity Best Practices (diversitybestpractices.com), and the Working Mother Research Institute. Working Mother Media’s mission is to serve as a champion of culture change.

Bring Along Comforts of Home While on the Road Memorial Day Weekend

Allstate Offers RV Safety and Insurance Tips

This release contains: 1 Photo, 1 Related Document

Memorial Day is a popular time for Americans to escape to destinations around the country for a long weekend. Many will load up their recreational vehicle with outdoor toys and their pets to visit family or head to their favorite camping spot.

RVs come in various shapes and sizes and include towable campers and toy haulers (conventional or fifth-wheel) and motorhomes. Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) survey data from 2013 shows that an estimated 14 million Americans planned to spend their Memorial Day weekend in an RV.

"The modern RV offers comfort, flexibility and convenience that makes roughing it in the great outdoors not so rough," said Jeff Sadler, Allstate product line manager. "Following simple safety procedures and having proper RV insurance coverage can keep the focus on enjoying time with friends and family."

In preparation for Memorial Day and a summer of camping, Allstate offers insurance and safety reminders to help consumers feel confident their camper is properly insured and road-ready.

Are You Covered?: It’s a good idea to make sure your insurance is up-to-date and that you have the proper RV coverage.

  • Awning: The awning is part of your camper and especially important to help keep shaded from the hot summer sun. Damage to a permanent awning is commonly covered by comprehensive coverage that offers protection for non-collision losses.

  • Sound System: A sound system permanently installed by the manufacturer is generally covered up to $2,500, less your policy deductible.

  • Your Gear: Contents coverage provides for loss or damage to covered property like fishing equipment and bikes contained in your camper when caused by fire or lightning.

Protect Your Camper: Being in an accident can ruin your trip. Here are safety tips to help protect your camper while on the road.

  • Watch Your Height: When you’re driving, it’s critical to know your camper’s exact height and always be on the lookout for things like low-hanging branches.

  • Be Conscious of Your Length: This includes making sure you allow enough room when maneuvering in a parking lot, when overtaking other vehicles on the road or when merging into other lanes.

  • Practice Towing Your Camper: The extra weight of pulling a camper behind your vehicle is important to adjust for by allowing extra space to come to a complete stop and when navigating narrow roads.

  • Practice Parking Before You Go: Parking with a camper can be a challenge but practicing in an empty parking lot before your trip can help prepare.

Before you hit the road this summer, consider these recommendations and choose the insurance coverage that’s right for you. Also, consider purchasing an RV Roadhelp Plan from Allstate Motor Club in case of any unplanned adventures. To find an agent in your area, visit www.allstate.com.

Closing the Gender Gap, Opening Doors for Women

A new report sponsored by TD Ameritrade Institutional reveals the causes and effects of the financial services gender gap.

Women comprised the majority (51 percent) of management and professional positions in the U.S., yet only 26 percent of all personal financial advisors are women. A new effort supported by TD Ameritrade Institutional sheds light on the issue and encourages women to pursue careers in financial planning.

Tom Nally and Kate Healy, Managing Director of Institutional Marketing, represented TD Ameritrade Institutional at a recent CFP Board Women Initiative (WIN) event and were on hand to help reveal a new study pinpointing why there are so few women in financial planning.

Why So Few Women in Financial Planning?

The study revealed a few key themes:

  • Women lack familiarity with the role of a financial planner and are therefore unlikely to seriously consider a financial planning career.

  • The insider’s positive view of financial planning and the opportunity to have a personally and financially fulfilling career is not being widely or adequately communicated to women on the outside.

  • Gender discrimination and bias exist within the financial planning profession, likely resulting in women feeling unwelcome and unsupported.

  • Compared to men, women are recruited less, hired less and paid less.

“The face of wealth is changing and as an industry we must embrace more diversity,” Nally told the audience. “Historically the financial services industry has not done an effective job in attracting women as advisors or serving the needs of women as consumers. And today investors need more help than ever. We need the talents and skills of young women to advance the profession and ensure the longevity of our industry.”

How will TD Ameritrade Institutional Make an Impact?

TD Ameritrade Institutional will continue its efforts to change the way women see the financial planning profession and the way the industry fosters and encourages women. Much of our efforts are aimed at the next generation of advisors and broadening awareness among young men and women.

  1. The TD Ameritrade Institutional NextGen Scholarship and Grant program support students studying financial planning and encourages universities to develop innovative curriculum.

  2. The TD Ameritrade RIA Intern Network and Internship program will help advisors recruit, train and retain top talent to their firms.

  3. TD Ameritrade will continue to sponsor research , and offer networking and professional development opportunities for women at events such as the National Conference and Elite Summit.

  4. TD Ameritrade will advocate and build awareness through keynote speaking and participation in industry association efforts such as the CFP Board’s WIN initiative and Financial Planning Magazine’s Women Advisors Forum Series .
