GEICO associates get muddy for Armed Services YMCA

Mud TeamGuest blogger: Alex Danoff

At the 14th annual Armed Services YMCA Mud Run in Norfolk, Virginia, last month, GEICO’s associates took to the mud like a pig takes to … well, mud.

GEICO served as title sponsor of the event, and 23 associates from the company’s Virginia Beach office entered the race, alongside 20 additional associates and their friends and family members who volunteered as race marshals and water station attendants. GEICO’s racers navigated the intense 5-mile course of sand, woods, water hazards, obstacles and mud pits to win both first and second place in the team competition— a first in the event’s history.

The race, held at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, is one of the largest military events in the Hampton Roads area. Proceeds benefited Armed Services YMCA of Hampton Roads, a military charity devoted to nurturing the well-being of the Hampton Roads military community and all five branches of service.

Winning the top spots reportedly guaranteed GEICO’s teams first dibs on the showers, which you can be sure their friends and family members greatly appreciated.

CDP Recognizes Allstate as Leader in Climate Change Transparency; Only Property and Casualty Insurer to Make List

Reductions in carbon emissions, energy usage rise to top of Allstate’s environmental accomplishments

This release contains: 2 Photos, 1 Related Document

Allstate has been recognized as a leader among the S&P 500 for excelling at disclosure of climate change data by CDP, the world’s only global environmental disclosure system. Allstate scored 97 out of 100 in this year’s report, the highest score the company has received since it started reporting in 2007

"This the fifth year Allstate has been included in the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index, an achievement we’re quite proud of given how many companies have intensified their commitment to climate-related issues in recent years" said Vicky Dinges, senior vice president of corporate responsibility at Allstate. "We continue to look for innovative approaches to manage our environmental footprint in a way that helps our business be more sustainable and our communities more livable."

CDP’s annual CDLI index spotlights companies listed on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (S&P 500) that have demonstrated a high level of transparency and data quality in their disclosure of climate-related information. Thirty-three S&P 500 companies are featured in the 2014 CDLI.

Company disclosures to CDP are scored on a scale of 100 for completeness and data quality. High scores indicate that companies provided robust climate data and conveyed a strong understanding of corporate climate-related issues. The companies in the top 10 percent for disclosure scores are awarded a position on the CDLI. The S&P 500 report including names of companies featured in the CDLI can be found at www.cdp.net.

Allstate has also made significant progress toward its long-term environmental sustainability goals in recent years. Notable accomplishments include:

  • Reduced energy use in owned facilities by 19.39 percent compared to the company’s 2007 baseline, nearly reaching Allstate’s long-term goal to cut energy use 20 percent by 2020.

  • Reduced carbon footprint by 6.3 percent in 2013 and nearly 27 percent since 2007.

  • Kept more than one million plastic water bottles out of landfills thanks to 168 water-filtration stations installed across Allstate facilities.

  • Installed innovative airflow management technology in two Allstate data centers, which reduced the amount of power used and netted savings of nearly $120,000.

  • Published a comprehensive new climate change policy, defining Allstate’s approach to one of today’s most critical environmental issues.

Memory of the Month: They might be giants

Each month, we share an image from GEICO’s past and invite you to exercise your caption-writing skills.

Leo Lorimer old photoThis is the month in which we celebrate GEICO’s birthday, which we call Founders Day. For me, it’s a time to recall the early history of this company, and the people who built the company where I’ve been privileged to work for 30 years.

Which brings me to this photo, shot sometime in the late 1960s; it doesn’t depict any particularly momentous event, but it’s noteworthy just the same. This is one of a surprisingly few photos that include the two men mostly responsible for the beginning of GEICO’s success story.

That’s Leo Goodwin in the center, presenting a bowling trophy to a member of the GEICO bowling league. Goodwin founded GEICO in the mid-1930s and guided it through the lean start-up years, ably assisted by his wife, Lillian. Behind Goodwin is Lorimer Davidson, who became associated with GEICO in the mid-1940s as an investment banker who handled GEICO’s account.

Davidson and Goodwin became fast friends, and Davidson became GEICO’s financial vice president in 1948. This fortuitous pairing coincided with a lengthy stretch of profitable growth for the company until Goodwin decided that, at age 72, he was ready to retire from active management of the company and move into an advisory role.

In 1958, Davidson was named the new president of GEICO. He would oversee another 12 years of great prosperity for the company before he, too, chose to retire. None of the next four men who held the top job at GEICO after Davidson’s retirement would serve the company in that role for a longer stretch of time.

GEICO celebrates its 78th birthday this month. Our recent history, which includes us becoming the nation’s second-largest auto insurer, is pretty impressive. But I can’t help but wonder where we might be without the vision and leadership of Leo Goodwin and Lorimer Davidson, who steered us through our first 32 years.

What do you suppose this bowler would say?

GEICO recognized for support of the military

Patriot Day CeremonySince GEICO opened in 1936, military personnel – whether active duty, guard, reserve or retired – have held a special place among policyholders. Today, GEICO supports the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, the USO, Armed Services YMCA, Tragedy Assistance Program, and The Fisher House Foundation. On Patriot Day this month, Warner Robins Air Force Base personnel visited GEICO’s Macon, Georgia, office and presented GEICO with an award for its “Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.”

Amanda McNair was among the presenters. She is a service representative in the Macon office AND a technical sergeant in the Air Force Reserves, who reports to Warner Robins Air Force base for her reserve duty. In his comments during the brief presentation ceremony, the base’s senior representative, Major Steve Miner, the 413 Force Support Flight Commander, explained that McNair has informed him of all GEICO has done to support her, not only by facilitating the ease of her leave but by ensuring her transition back into the GEICO family was smooth. Major Miner also mentioned that many other reserve members at his base work at GEICO and have also spoken highly of the support the company provides.

After the awards were presented, Joe Easterling, GEICO’s health services & leave administration supervisor, closed the ceremony by thanking the Air Force personnel and expressing GEICO’s pride in being recognized for its support of the military.

“Having served in the USAFR,” Easterling said, “I know the difficulties that those who serve in the Armed Forces have to face. The real honor belongs to those who serve and the sacrifices they make, having to transition between their military duties and their civilian jobs, which is no easy task. I am proud to work for a company where supporting the armed forces is a top priority.”

Pop Sensation Austin Mahone Visits Gowanda High School as Part of a National Effort for Teens to #GetThereSafe

The Allstate Foundation awards grand prize to Gowanda teen for spreading the word on smart driving

This release contains: 1 Video, 1 Photo, 1 Related Document

By sending a simple yet important message to her friends to #GetThereSafe, Alysha Gassman now has the opportunity to meet pop superstar Austin Mahone at her school. The senior from Gowanda High School was awarded the grand prize as part of The Allstate Foundation’s #GetThereSafe Challenge – a sweepstakes that encouraged teens to spread safe driving messages among their peers. Mahone’s visit on Sept. 26 culminates efforts that kicked off in May for Global Youth Traffic Safety Month and throughout the summer, the deadliest season for young drivers on the road.

"The Allstate Foundation’s #GetThereSafe Challenge was a fun way to use my social media power for good – sharing with my friends how I get to places safely and asking them to do the same," said Gassman. "To me, I feel that I won two prizes – meeting Austin Mahone and keeping my friends safe."

Car crashes continue to be the No. 1 killer of American teens, causing more teen deaths each year than homicide, suicide and cancer. The Allstate Foundation’s #GetThereSafe program asks teens to limit three risky behaviors that can cause teen crash fatalities: speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt and distractions caused by teen passengers in the car. As part of the Challenge, teens shared photos through social media as they arrived at destinations safely and included a specific driving behavior hashtag – #slowdown, #seatbelt and #nodistractions. More than 2,160 teens shared safe driving messages with their peers for a chance to win a visit from Mahone.

"It was awesome to see how many teens got involved in spreading the #GetThereSafe messages to their friends," said Mahone. "I’m excited to visit Gowanda High School and meet teens who are making a difference – like Alysha."

Allstate Foundation Survey Finds Nearly Two-Thirds of Hispanic Women Know a Victim of Abuse

Purple Purse Challenge helps bring awareness to domestic violence and financial abuse; raises funds for service providers

This release contains: 1 Related Document, 1 Photo

According to a new national survey released by The Allstate Foundation, nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of Hispanic women say they have personally known a victim of some type of abuse and three-in-ten (30 percent) have personally been victimized. To raise awareness in the Hispanic community, The Allstate Foundation is encouraging the public to participate in the Purple Purse Challenge by donating to local nonprofit organizations that support financial empowerment services for domestic violence survivors. The Challenge is already underway at bolsomorado.com and has raised nearly $500,000.

"Financial abuse is the No.1 reason why victims stay in abusive relationships and our data shows that less than half of Hispanic women say they have taken steps to protect themselves from financial abuse," said Patricia Garza, director of strategic philanthropy at Allstate. "Allstate Foundation Purple Purse wants to help make conversations about financial abuse and domestic violence easier and acceptable to have in our society. I hope you’ll join me and support a local domestic violence service provider in your community, so that no woman makes the difficult decision to stay in an abusive relationship simply because she doesn’t have the resources to leave."

The Allstate Foundation is contributing nearly $650,000 in incentive funding and direct grants to participating organizations in the Purple Purse Challenge. The Challenge kicked off earlier this month and is raising money for 140 domestic violence serving organizations across the country on http://ift.tt/1u1yJdG. The more donations each nonprofit collects, the more incentive funding the organization can compete to win from The Allstate Foundation. The Challenge continues through Oct. 3, 2014.

The Allstate Foundation’s new survey, Silent Weapon: Domestic Violence and Financial Abuse, sought to understand the attitudes different demographic groups have about violence in relationships and the financial control that often accompanies domestic violence.

Additional findings from the survey include:

  • Hispanics, including both men and women, are twice as likely (51 percent) to see domestic violence as a serious problem among people they know than their white non-Hispanic counterparts (25 percent).

  • When asked if physical, sexual, emotion and financial abuse were reasons for a victim to leave a dangerous relationship, only 39 percent of Hispanics believe financial abuse is “always” a reason to leave, making it the least likely reason Hispanics would leave. Physical abuse ranked No.1 with 88 percent indicating it is a reason to leave.

  • Hispanic parents (58 percent) have discussed domestic violence with their children more frequently than white non-Hispanic parents (43 percent).

  • Nearly seven-in-10 (69 percent) of Hispanic women with children age 16 and older have talked to their children about domestic violence.

This year, actress Kerry Washington is lending her voice and serving as the national Purple Purse ambassador. Limited-edition purple purses designed by Kerry Washington will be distributed among community leaders, Purple Purse community partners, celebrities and media to raise awareness for this important cause. The purse represents the center of a woman’s financial domain and purple is the color of national domestic violence awareness. The Allstate Foundation is also distributing 80,000 Purple Purse charms through Purple Purse Challenge participants to attach to a bag or purse and show support year-round.

Visit purplepurse.com to learn more about domestic violence and financial abuse as well as how to start conversations about this important topic. For immediate assistance with a dangerous situation, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799 SAFE (7233) or TTY 1-800-787-3224.

For more information, visit http://ift.tt/QoU2bQ.

Survey Methodology

The Allstate Foundation Silent Weapon: Domestic Violence and Financial Abuse survey was conducted July 18-27, 2014 by FTI Consulting among a nationally representative sample of 1,020 American adults age 18+ with additional oversamples among 200 Americans age 18-33 (“Millennials”), 200 Hispanic Women age 18+, and 250 adults in the Chicago media market. The margin of error for the national sample is ± 3% at the 95% confidence interval. The survey was conducted using the web-enabled KnowledgePanel®, a probability-based panel designed to be representative of the U.S. population. Initially, participants are chosen scientifically by a random selection of telephone numbers and residential addresses. Persons in selected households are then invited by telephone or by mail to participate in the web-enabled KnowledgePanel®. For those who agree to participate, but do not already have Internet access, GfK provides at no cost a laptop and ISP connection. People who already have computers and Internet service are permitted to participate using their own equipment. Panelists then receive unique log-in information for accessing surveys online, and then are sent emails throughout each month inviting them to participate in research.

GEICO’s Fredericksburg, Virginia, office turns 20

FOBWe love our celebrations at GEICO, and we had a milestone anniversary to celebrate this summer. Our regional headquarters facility in Fredericksburg, Virginia – where I worked until just a couple of months ago – turned 20 years old, and associates there enjoyed a monthlong celebration that included contests, cook-outs and much more. My former colleagues are full of GEICO Pride!

Interesting facts about the office:

  • Fburg20GEICO’s Fredericksburg office has been voted a “Best Place to Work” in Virginia for the past three years.

  • We employ nearly 4,000 associates in Fredericksburg … and we’re looking to hire more!

  • Each floor of the main building is almost the size of a soccer field.

  • This office contains a gym, a Starbucks and its own cafeteria.

  • It is conveniently located within an hour’s drive of Washington, D.C.

What our Fredericksburg associates say:

Stephanie Payne (Service Supervisor)

What is your favorite memory at GEICO?

My favorite memory at GEICO would be the first profit-sharing meeting I attended. That was the first experience where I knew I was working for a special company. The excitement and team atmosphere made me feel I finally found my career and I choose the best company to work for!

How have you made a difference at GEICO?

Being a supervisor, my ultimate goal is to ensure great experiences for our customers and to develop agents while guiding them to achieve their goals! When I achieve both, it’s not only rewarding for me, but it’s a huge reward for the company! Gaining net promoters by developing agents into becoming advocates for excellent customer service is a win-win!

Nikki Smet (Service)

What’s your all-time favorite moment at GEICO?

My favorite moment at GEICO was when Fredericksburg hit 1 million policyholders and we had a huge celebration!

What keeps you at GEICO?

The opportunities to succeed within the company.

Allstate Publishes Corporate Responsibility Report, "Force for Good"

2013 report highlights Allstate’s bold commitments to improve society and business

This release contains: 1 Video, 1 Photo, 1 Related Document

Today Allstate released its annual Corporate Responsibility report, titled Force for Good. The report focuses on Allstate’s efforts to bring out the good in people’s lives by delivering solutions to challenging societal issues, strengthening communities and elevating its sustainable business practices. This is Allstate’s twelfth corporate responsibility report.

"Force for Good is about us doing the right thing, putting people ahead of policies and defying expectations," said Vicky Dinges, senior vice president of corporate responsibility at Allstate. "It’s a mindset that guides our decisions and priorities, especially regarding our approach to corporate responsibility. We delivered great progress in 2013 across our citizenship goals and will continue to challenge ourselves to improve our performance in years to come."

In 2013, Allstate brought the “Good Hands” to life for people in need in virtually every city in the country. Sixty-five percent of Allstate agency owners and employees were involved in corporate responsibility programs during the year, including a record 3,700 volunteers during its annual Week of Service. In addition, The Allstate Foundation, Allstate, its employees and agency owners contributed more than $29 million to help more than 8,600 diverse nonprofit organizations.

Accomplishments highlighted in this year’s report include:

Business Practices

  • Ranked among top companies for diversity: Included on the DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity® list for the third year in a row, reflecting our core value of inclusive diversity.

  • Maximized investments to deliver social impact: Maintained Allstate Investments’ nearly $1 billion commitment to socially responsible strategies, such as Low Income Housing Tax Credits and a program to help identify and develop minority- and women-owned private equity firms.

  • Leveraged big data to combat insurance fraud: Created predictive modeling algorithms through Allstate’s Quantitative Research & Analytics team to help identify and prevent claims fraud. Eliminating fraud is good for Allstate and for consumers who may benefit from lower premiums.

Environmental Stewardship

  • Nearly achieved our long-term energy-reduction goal years ahead of plan: Reduced energy use in owned facilities by 10.87 percent versus 2012, and by 19.39 percent compared to our 2007 baseline, nearly reaching Allstate’s long-term goal to cut energy use 20 percent by 2020.

  • Continued strong performance in reducing Allstate’s carbon footprint: Lowered our footprint by 6.3 percent versus 2012 and nearly 27 percent since 2007.

  • Provided water filtration to curb plastic bottle waste: Kept more than 1 million plastic water bottles out of landfills, thanks to 168 water-filtration stations installed across Allstate facilities.

Social Impact

  • Helped more teens stay safer on the road: Engaged more than 1.2 million teens in our Teen Safe Driving programs.

  • Broadened reach of our domestic violence program: Financially empowered more than 171,000 domestic violence survivors, helping women across the country achieve the self-sufficiency they need to get free and stay free from abuse.

  • Led new public-private effort to reduce violence in our hometown of Chicago: Helped launch – and continue to lead – a $50 million multiyear program to combat urban violence in the city with our sponsorship of Get In Chicago.

40 years of magic in Macon

Macon Open HouseGeorgia is on our mind! GEICO’s Macon office, in the heart of Georgia, celebrated its 40th anniversary on Aug. 12. The office opened in 1974 with only 150 associates dressed in their favorite flare pants and wide lapels. While the fashions have changed over the years, our Macon associates’ drive has not.

Today, Macon is home to more GEICO associates than any of our other locations around the country, with more than 5,000 associates providing service to the Midwest and Southeast states. Want to join the team? We plan to add more than 500 new associates by the end of the year.

And now for a walk down Macon’s memory lane… Can you guess what’s happening in these photos?

The Allstate Foundation Invites Public to Fill Up Purple Purses: Online Challenge of 140 Nonprofits Will Raise Funds for Domestic Violence Services

Purple Purse Challenge helps kick off national program to build awareness about domestic violence and financial abuse

It is the least talked about part of domestic violence—financial abuse. In an endeavor to raise money for nonprofits that provide domestic violence and economic empowerment services, The Allstate Foundation has built a program to help organizations across the country raise money and build awareness for their efforts. In addition to providing the social platform for a national fund-raising effort on http://ift.tt/1lwHkG0, The Allstate Foundation will contribute nearly $650,000 to the Purple Purse Challenge in incentive funding and direct grants to the participating organizations.

The Purple Purse Challenge launches on Sept. 2, 2014 and will last through Oct. 3, 2014. Anyone interested in giving to participating organizations can donate at http://ift.tt/1lwHkG2. The more donations each nonprofit collects, the more incentive funding the organization can compete for the opportunity to win from The Allstate Foundation.

"Nearly 10,000 requests for help from domestic violence victims go unanswered on an average day due to a lack of funding for victim services," said Vicky Dinges, senior vice president of corporate responsibility at Allstate. "No victim should be turned away when they seek services for themselves and for their children. The Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Challenge will make sure more survivors get financial education services, and more families get safe and stay safe from abuse."

The Purple Purse Challenge creates momentum into October, which is national Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and is a part of Allstate Foundation Purple Purse that aims to educate the public on the role financial abuse has in trapping women in abusive relationships.

As a part of this year’s program, limited-edition purple purses, designed for Allstate Foundation Purple Purse, will be distributed among community leaders, Purple Purse Challenge participants, celebrities and media to raise awareness for this important cause. The purple purse represents the center of a woman’s financial domain and purple is the color of national domestic violence awareness.

Donors who give to a nonprofit participant in the Challenge from Sept. 2 through Oct. 3 will be entered in a weekly drawing to win one of the exclusive purses. Additionally, The Allstate Foundation is giving the opportunity for one lucky person and a guest to travel to New York City for the unveiling of the purse design at an exclusive event on Sept. 15. For full rules and details please visit http://ift.tt/1lwHkG2.

The Allstate Foundation is also distributing 80,000 Purple Purse charms through Purple Purse Challenge participants and Allstate agency owners to attach to a bag or purse to show support year-round. The charms are outfitted with a story of a survivor who overcame abuse through financial empowerment.

Since 2005, The Allstate Foundation Domestic Violence Program has empowered domestic violence survivors with resources, knowledge and skills they need to achieve financial empowerment and life free from abuse. Since its inception, the program has helped nearly 400,000 domestic violence survivors leave abusive relationships through financial education, job training and readiness, and microenterprise programs.
