Memory of the Month: Clearing a path

Each month, we share an image from GEICO’s past and invite you to exercise your caption-writing skills.

Snow ShovelingI love this picture. Can you guess why?

Back in the late 1990s (about when this photo was taken), before the Gecko made his debut, GEICO was using an advertising slogan along the lines of “Safety is our only policy.” In fact, the “Buckboard” ad wherein four horse-drawn wagons arrive at an intersection in the middle of nowhere and everyone tries to let everybody else go first is still my mother’s favorite.

We don’t use that slogan any more, but we’re still concerned with safety. You see this not just in the zeal with which we clean our lots and walkways when it snows, but by our long-standing support of organizations like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Washington Regional Alcohol Program, and by the wealth of safety information we offer on our website.

But none of that is why I love this picture. You see, I am a proud alumnus of the University of Maryland, and the guy in the foreground here is wearing a Maryland Terps hat!

Allstate Unveils Fastest Claims Payment in the Industry

Insurer introduces Fast Mobile e-Payment℠, a same-day payment method in the Allstate ExpressPay℠ network

This release contains: 3 Photos, 1 Related Document

With just an email address or mobile phone number, consumers can now get an Allstate claim payment made directly to their bank account in a single day with Fast Mobile e-Payment, one payment method now available in the new Allstate ExpressPay portfolio. Working with Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Allstate becomes the first U.S. company to use the new digital disbursement method.

"When you have a claim, you want to receive your payment quickly," says Allstate President Matt Winter. "Fast Mobile e-Payment simplifies and accelerates the payment process. It’s another good example of how Allstate is innovating on behalf of customers."

Fast Mobile e-Payment eliminates delays that can occur with snail mail and lost checks by requiring only an e-mail address or mobile phone number in order to process a payment. The new solution – which can be faster than all existing payment methods, including Electronic Funds Transfer – is immediately available across the U.S. and works with any bank to handle all Allstate auto and property insurance claims that have a single payee.

Here’s how the service works:

  • A consumer confirms he/she is willing to be paid utilizing Fast Mobile e-Payment.

  • Allstate gathers email address or mobile phone number from the consumer and sends information to Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

  • Consumer gets an email or text message with instructions on how to receive payment.

  • A one-time registration process is performed by the consumer that will register their email address or mobile phone number in order to receive payment.

  • Once registered, consumer automatically receives the payment into his/her account.

"We are proud to be one of the first banks to offer this electronic business-to-consumer payment solution," says Bank of America Merrill Lynch Head of Global Payments Ather Williams. "Allstate and their customers may benefit greatly from the speed and convenience this solution provides."

Fast Mobile e-Payment is the latest, customer-friendly advance in Allstate’s overall claims experience that delivers fast, fair and easy service. Allstate ExpressPay is the complete suite of streamlined payment solutions Allstate offers consumers. The company’s customers already enjoy innovations at their fingertips like Digital Locker® to inventory all their valuables and belongings and QuickFoto Claim® that enables customers to file an auto claim by submitting pictures through a smartphone app.

"Consumers are more connected than ever, and they expect companies to offer the technology to do business simply, instantaneously and on-the-go," says Suren Gupta, executive vice president of Allstate Technology & Strategic Ventures. "We’re committed to innovation and we’ll add more features like Fast Mobile e-Payment to Allstate ExpressPay soon."

About Allstate Corporation:

Add some big flavor to the big game with these recipes

Bean dipThe big game Feb. 1 isn’t just about football – not for me, anyway. It’s about football AND making sure your friends and family enjoy their fill of delicious foods that you prepare. If you haven’t nailed down what you’re making yet, I am here to help, with my favorite recipes – guaranteed to please gatherings large or small.

Southwestern Layered Bean Dip – I like to have healthy options available for my family and friends, and this recipe is delicious and healthier than many other foods you’re likely to be served during the game. Here is the recipe, I’m sure you will enjoy it!

Guacamole – This is probably my favorite dip to make, and it’s fun because you can always adjust the mix of ingredients depending on what you like. I personally like to use more cilantro and onion in mine and less tomato, but however you decide to make yours, I’m sure it will turn out great! Here is the recipe that I continue to use and it hasn’t let me down yet.

wingsSticky Sweet Chili Chicken Wings – Is there anything that goes better with football than delicious chicken wings? I like unique flavors, so I tend to go with something other than buffalo or BBQ sauce, which is why I wanted to share this recipe. If you decide to make yours this way, I’m confident you’ll create a new party favorite.

No matter what you make, I’m sure you’re in for a great time. Enjoy the weekend, and go, Seahawks… or Patriots. Ah man, I still can’t decide. And as long as the food’s good, who cares who wins?

TD Ameritrade to Host Annual Meeting of Stockholders

Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl XI comes to GEICO Stadium Feb 1.

GEICO Puppy BowlGEICO is at it again – tooth and paw. The company is sponsoring Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl XI at GEICO Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 1, at 3 p.m. ET.

The Puppy Bowl is the premier sporting event of the year that mimics the Big Game, featuring 85 bodacious and rambunctious pups from shelters across the U.S.

For fans just nipping at the chance to interact with the pups before the big game, Animal Planet has created a unique game day experience that football fans will love, featuring a Puppy Bowl XI Pregame show with analysis and commentary and a Puppy Bowl XI Starting Lineup where fans can get to know the game faces of the canine competitors on each team. And of course you’ll be able to pick your Puppy Bowl XI fantasy team, choosing the pups you think will chew up the opposition during the game.

When sports rivalries come to mind, Red Sox/Yankees and Redskins/Cowboys have nothing on Puppy Bowl XI, which for the first time features teams Team Ruff against Team Fluff. With everything that’s on the line, this one will be for barking rights.

GEICO Puppy BowlAt the halftime of Puppy Bowl XI, pet lovers will be in for a special treat as Animal Planet brings the one and only “Katty Furry” from her busy tour schedule to perform her hit “I Hissed (at) a Girl.” Will her ex-husband Russell Terrier Brand be in attendance? You’ll have to tune in to find out. The halftime show will also feature hamsters flying a biplane for the best aerial view.

What is a football game without cheerleaders? This year, a handful of goat cheerleaders will perform their unique routine, in exchange for which they will be richly rewarded – Animal Planet allows the goats to graze outside of GEICO Stadium as payment.

At the end of Puppy Bowl XI, fans will also have a chance to follow up on some of their favorite puppy players in a segment titled Adoption Tails. Who doesn’t love a happy ending?

New opportunities brewing in Seattle area for GEICO

Renton openingBy guest blogger Mike Young, public relations

GEICO has expanded in the Greater Seattle area, and the news has our whole family percolating with excitement. Our claims operation, located less than 20 miles south of downtown Seattle in Renton, Washington, recently moved to a new office to accommodate significant growth.

We plan to hire 200 new associates during the next 18 months to fill a variety of claims openings at the office, including liability claims representatives, claim service representatives and the Management Development Program. In all three roles, associates gain access to GEICO’s industry-leading training and have the opportunity to help customers who’ve had an accident or suffered a loss.

Mike Quesada, who runs the Greater Seattle area claims office, said that currently, with more than 400,000 GEICO-insured vehicles in the state, there is a clear opportunity to expand. “Now, we are no doubt well-positioned to handle increased volumes of claims as we continue to gain market share in Washington,” Quesada said.

Because of this growth, and other recent milestones such as selling our 13 millionth policy and becoming the second largest auto insurer in the U.S., there really hasn’t been a better time to be working at GEICO.

Tony Oeun, who recently joined the GEICO Renton team as a claim representative, is thoroughly impressed with GEICO’s dedication to the community as well as its associates. “Whether it is through the tuition reimbursement program or its ability to motivate associates, GEICO has provided a positive image to the Seattle/Renton region,” Oeun said.

Job seekers interested in becoming a part of the GEICO team can apply for positions by visiting http://ift.tt/1y9aJpa. You’ll be asked to create a careers account and profile for your applications, which is easiest to complete from a laptop or desktop computer.

Marching for Diversity on Martin Luther King Day

mlk marchThis week in Washington, D.C., I had the unique opportunity to participate with some former classmates from Woodrow Wilson High School in the Martin Luther King, Jr. March for Diversity. More than 50 years have passed since MLK’s unforgettable “March on Washington.”

As I walked up Martin Luther King Avenue along the parade route, I was surrounded by King’s beautiful vision of a place where all races, religions and ethnicities have come together in support of a common cause. In the past couple of years, MLK Day has become synonymous with volunteerism and giving back to the community. Along the parade route, there were multitudes of tents set up by organizations dedicated to raising awareness of a variety of social, educational and economic issues that greatly affect our communities.

I was proud to see such a diverse group of people come together to celebrate and support each other. On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial back in 1963, Dr. King proclaimed in his famous “I Have a Dream” speech that one day all men will be created equal and judged not by the color of their skin but the content of their character.

Dr. King said that diversity and inclusion are the keys to understanding each other’s unique experiences and inspirational perspectives. Diversity represents all walks of life.

At GEICO, promoting diversity has always been in the forefront of the company’s message to its associates. GEICO recognizes that diversity makes us a better company every day. As a catalyst for new ideas, creativity and productivity in the workplace, diversity opens new windows and gives everyone a chance to embrace, honor and celebrate culture. This is the epitome of what MLK Day is all about.

Liability On the Line At Football Watch Parties

Allstate Insurance provides tips to build a good defense against liability risks when having people over to watch the big game.

This release contains: 1 Photo, 1 Related Document

Mayhem likes more than just college football games – it can show up in many forms when someone hosts a watch party for the big game. So, if you’re planning to have a party for the big game this year, you’ll want to have the following tips from Allstate and the Insurance Information Institute in your playbook:

  • Make sure you understand your state laws. Before sending out party invitations, familiarize yourself with your state’s “social host liability” laws. These laws vary widely from state to state. Some states do not impose any liability on social hosts. Others limit liability to injuries that occur on the host’s premises. Some extend the host’s liability to injuries that occur anywhere a guest who has consumed alcohol goes. Many states have laws that pertain specifically to furnishing alcohol to minors.

  • Consider venues other than your home for the party. Hosting your party at a restaurant or bar with a liquor license, rather than at your home, will help reduce liquor liability risks.

  • Encourage guests to pick a designated driver who will refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages so that he or she can drive other guests home.

  • Be a responsible host/hostess. Limit your own alcohol intake so that you will be better able to judge your guests’ sobriety.

  • Offer non-alcoholic beverages and always serve food. Eating and drinking plenty of water, or other non-alcoholic beverages, can help counter the effects of alcohol.

  • If guests drink too much or seem too tired to drive home, call a cab, arrange a ride with a sober guest or have them sleep at your home.

  • Encourage all your guests to wear seatbelts as they drive home. Studies show that seatbelts save lives.

  • Speak with your insurance agent or company representativeabout your homeowners coverage and any exclusions, conditions or limitations your policy might have for this kind of risk.

Keeping these tips in mind as you plan for a party can help you make better decisions before the big game. Whether the party is large or small, any host will want to act responsibly to protect friends and family enjoying one the biggest sporting events of the year.

GEICO turns up the dial for Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego

???????????????????????????????The numbers are in, and for GEICO and CBS Radio, they’re quite an achievement.

The 5th Annual Holiday of Miracles Radiothon, hosted by CBS Radio’s KYXY 96.5 in San Diego in December and sponsored by GEICO, raised $284,000 to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital. This pushed the radiothon’s five-year fundraising total to more than $1,384,000 for Rady.

???????????????????????????????

In addition to sponsoring the radiothon, GEICO volunteers manned the phones for two hours to help collect donations for the hospital, and the GEICO Gecko paid Rady patients a special visit for some high-fives and hugs on Dec. 10.

Honor Dr. King’s legacy with a Day of Service

Martin Luther King MemorialLooking for a meaningful activity you can engage in on Martin Luther King Jr. Day? How about achieving greatness?

“Everyone has the power for greatness,” Dr. King said, “not for fame, but greatness, because greatness is determined by service.”

And opportunities to serve will abound on Jan. 19. Wherever you are, if you do an Internet search for “MLK Day of Service,” you’ll probably find several volunteer opportunities in your community.

In the Washington, D.C., area where the GEICO headquarters is located, I found many such opportunities this way. One is sponsored by City Year, a national education-focused organization rooted in the idea that young people in service have the power to transform lives, schools, and communities. Each Martin Luther King Jr. Day, City Year mobilizes its 2,800 corps members and thousands more volunteers for a day of service in communities across the nation. In D.C. this Monday, City Year volunteers will gather at Eastern High School at 8 a.m. to refurbish the building and grounds.

You’ll find lots of other opportunities, in DC and elsewhere, at AllForGood.org. Make Martin Luther King Day a day ON, not a day OFF.

The Gecko’s next stop on his journey: Norfolk, Virginia

He may be little, but the GEICO Gecko didn’t get easily flustered by the sheer size of the USS Wisconsin on his journey across America. In Norfolk, Virginia, the Gecko arrived in style on a helicopter for a private tour of the U.S. Navy battleship Wisconsin.

After earning five battle stars during World War II, the Wisconsin is now berthed at Nauticus, an interactive science and technology center, located at the Norfolk waterfront where the GEICO Gecko and any visitor can take a peek at the naval behemoth.

For more than 75 years, GEICO has been proud to serve the U.S. military!

Where should the Gecko go visit next? Tell us in the comments!

Try these seven money-saving resolutions for a more prosperous 2015

savingDo you feel that? That’s the palpable sense of relief that sets in with the passing of the holiday season. But if you’re anything like me, you still might be cringing a bit when you take a peek at the damage done to your bank account. Well, here are a few simple money-saving resolutions we can all make to pad our wallets throughout 2015 and take some of the sting out of the holiday gift-buying season next year.

  1. Hydrate the old-fashioned way. Opting for water instead of soda or juice will not only save you some cash, it’ll help keep that waistline in check too. And you can save even more by using a reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled.

  2. Get to the grocery store. It’s incredible how much money I save when I buy a week’s worth of groceries instead of eating at restaurants and ordering takeout. Buying generic brands and shopping in bulk for items you know you’ll need in the future can also help keep your costs down. And bringing reusable bags to the grocery store will cut down on plastic and could save you some change. Every little bit counts!

  3. Get energy-efficient. Cutting utility bills is easier than you might think. Simple adjustments like turning off lights when leaving rooms, programming your thermostat for greater efficiency, shortening your showers and immediately turning off faucets when you’re not using them can help make a difference. And when it comes time to shop for appliances and electronics, be sure to invest in energy-efficient brands and models.

  4. Enjoy movies and books on a budget. If you’re desperate to see that new blockbuster in theaters, catch a matinee and save yourself a few dollars. And if you need a new beach read, check your local library or ask a friend if they have a page-turner you can borrow.

  5. Cut your cable bill. It’s pretty tough to avoid paying for an Internet connection, but if you reduce your cable package to only the channels you really watch you can lower your bill substantially. You can even go one step further and cut the cable cord entirely without missing out on your favorite shows by using Internet-based hardware and programming.

  6. Skip that mall trip. You can get additional months and even years out of your clothing if you sew buttons and tears and patch up holes instead of buying new outfits. And if you do need to change your wardrobe up, check out your local thrift and consignment stores to score big savings and possibly even earn a few bucks for your used items.

  7. Lastly, get a quote from GEICO and you could save a bundle on auto, homeowners, motorcycle and many other insurance coverages!

Allstate Launches Aware Share Campaign Encouraging Americans to Share Wisely via Social Media

Burglars Monitoring Posts on Popular Social Sites to Identify Victims

This release contains: 1 Photo, 1 Related Document

Matt and Shannon, a young 20-something couple, were living their lives like many people do: Graduating from college, getting married, moving into their first home, taking vacations …and proudly sharing every aspect of these events across social media. What Matt and Shannon did not realize was that by posting details about vacations and business trips while they were not at home, as well as photos of the belongings in their new home, they were exposing themselves to theft and burglary and potentially contributing to the more than $16 billion lost in property crimes each year.

Thankfully, their social media sharing habits did not cause them to become victims of a burglary, but instead, the inspiration for Allstate Insurance Company’s launch of Project Aware Share which educates consumers about sharing safely and emphasizes the importance of having the right home protection.

"We were surprised to find out that our social media habits were opening us up to be potentially targeted by burglars," Shannon said. "We were even more surprised that our habits inspired an advertising campaign. Being part of this project has helped educate us about the potential risks of oversharing on social media. Partnering with Allstate to raise awareness about the importance of safe sharing practices makes complete sense; we’ve learned a lot and had fun along the way. Moving forward we will continue to share, but we will make sure our privacy settings are properly set. It could not have worked out any better for Matt and me."

More and more burglars are turning to social media to find their next target. Recently, a small study of convicted burglars revealed that seventy-eight percent of robbers use social media to do just that. Thirty-five percent of Americans ages 18-34 socially share their location, while one-in-five people still do not use privacy settings on social media.

"With the advent of more social networks and more people using them, sharing online–including personal information–has increased dramatically," said Sanjay Gupta, executive vice president of marketing, innovation and corporate relations, at Allstate Insurance Company. "As our world and technology change, so do people’s vulnerabilities. Allstate saw an important opportunity to educate consumers about safe sharing practices so they can enjoy the benefits of social media but also better protect themselves and their property."

Allstate’s Project Aware Share features a chronologically-unveiled series of Mayhem ads that portray mayhem in a most creative and unusual way during the broadcast of the 2015 College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Allstate® Sugar Bowl®. In the ads, Mayhem lets himself into a home left vacant by a couple, inspired by Matt and Shannon, who posted on social media that they are out of town attending the Allstate® Sugar Bowl® in New Orleans.

Mayhem then puts many of the couple’s household items for sale at bargain mayhem pricing on www.MayhemSale.com, which went live during the broadcast of the Allstate® Sugar Bowl® . Items for sale were replicas of Matt and Shannon’s real-life possessions, including their flat screen television, appliances and other belongings, and all but one item, the “family car,” were purchased quickly by consumers.
