Memory of the Month: A river runs through it

footbridgeEach month, we share an image from GEICO’s past and invite you to comment or exercise your caption-writing skills.

OK, maybe it’s more of a stream or creek than a river. Heck, it might have only been a gully. But whatever it was, GEICO associates crossed over it easily in the early 1960s, thanks to this lovely little pedestrian bridge between the parking lot and the corporate headquarters building.

The headquarters building, where I work, is still surrounded by what we like to call a “scenic, park-like setting,” including a variety of flowering trees and some of the most spectacular azaleas you’ll ever see. This particular bit of scenery, though, is long gone. A few short years after the original building was finished and occupied, it became clear that more office space was needed. Where this bridge and the adjacent trees once stood, there’s now another wing of the building.

The property still retains much of the beauty that initially attracted a young Tony Nicely, who was hired by GEICO in 1961 as an underwriting assistant. “You walked over a bridge, and there were trees that blocked the view of the building,” Nicely recalled. “I remember walking down and saying, ‘What a pretty building!’ and ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to work in a building like this?’ I didn’t know anything about insurance; I just thought it would be nice to work in a building like this.”

Evidently, it was. Nicely became GEICO’s CEO in 1993, and still works in that pretty building.

Behind the scenes: a crash-test exclusive

BelAirTwisted metal. Shattered glass. Blown tires. You might think I’m wandering through a junkyard, but that’s not the case. I’m talking about the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Vehicle Research Center, which I had the opportunity to visit recently.

This state-of-the-art facility, nestled among the farms of central Virginia’s idyllic countryside, is visited by engineers and journalists from all over the world to observe crash tests and learn more about the vast world of auto safety.

“They sure don’t build them like they used to…”

slingshotI’ve heard my grandparents and my parents say this more times than I’d care to count. With cars, this statement is definitely true – because now they’re built way better. Just look at what happened to the 1959 Chevy Bel Air that was crashed into another car head-on at 40 mph. It’s a grisly sight; the whole occupant compartment collapsed around the crash dummy. A human driver would have been killed or, at the very least, would have sustained severe, life-altering injuries. In a modern vehicle, the passenger compartment would not have crumpled this way, and a driver’s injuries would have been far less severe.

The highlight of my visit was observing a live crash test. I witnessed a small-overlap crash test, which is supposed to simulate a car striking the corner of another car or a fixed object like a telephone pole. The engineering know-how needed to pull off this test is fascinating. The car gets hooked up to a hydraulic slingshot mechanism and, after four minutes of charging, the test commences. In just a few short seconds, everything ends with a BANG … literally. Yeah; that’s not going to buff out.

Mazda6While the collision facility might be the main attraction, the Vehicle Research Center does much more than just crash cars. It also looks at the level of protection provided by child booster seats and regular passenger car seats, tests the overall strength of vehicle roofs, and has a separate outdoor track to test brakes and other new car safety technology.

And IIHS’ findings aren’t taken lightly – manufacturers continue to make improvements based on them, bringing even safer cars to you and me.

Paying respects to those who served

MemorialDayMSAsI’ll admit it; when I see Memorial Day coming up on the calendar, what immediately comes to mind is a long, sunny weekend with a cold beverage or two and maybe a swimming pool to cool off in. But each year I also make it a point to reflect on the true meaning of the holiday: recognizing those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

I’m proud to work for a company like GEICO that honors the service of current military members each year through the GEICO Military Service Awards (GMSAs). The GMSAs, held for the 27th year recently in Washington, D.C., paid tribute to a member of each service branch who volunteered their time and energy to improve their local communities by promoting drug and alcohol abuse prevention, fire safety and fire prevention, or traffic safety and accident prevention.

GEICO will continue to support members of our armed forces and veterans later this month by teaming up with the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia and the City of Virginia Beach for the second annual Warrior Week. The week-long event will give men and women throughout the country who have experienced the difficulties of military conflict the opportunity to challenge themselves through athletic events like cycling, surfing and many other activities.

So whatever fun plans you may have this Memorial Day, be sure to also take some time to remember those who served our country and support those who continue to do so today.

Protect yourself from identity theft

IDtheftBy now, you shouldn’t need to be reminded that your personal information is always at risk, by way of your smartphone, your computer, even your trash. As hard as you work to build up your credit, identity thieves are working even harder trying to steal your identity for monetary gain. Identity thieves will use any possible means to gain access to your personal information.

I have heard horror stories where thieves rummage through someone’s garbage or the trash of businesses to steal information. Identity thieves have a knack for contacting you by phone or email, pretending to work for legitimate companies in an attempt to get you to reveal important data. It could be as small as asking for your name and address just to build a profile on you.

Identity thieves will also hack into your personal computer and mobile devices as a way to steal your information. That’s right; your mobile device. Something as simple as setting your mobile device to pick up a Wi-Fi signal while you are sitting in a coffee shop can compromise all of your personal information. The open nature of public Wi-Fi allows anyone to snoop in on your device.

And once your personal information has been compromised, identity thieves can access your bank accounts and open credit cards using your name. If you have unexplained withdrawals from your bank account or unfamiliar charges on your credit card bill, or if you receive calls from debt collectors about bills that you aren’t familiar with, these are among the red flags that can mean someone has stolen your identity.

If your wallet, Social Security card, or other personal, financial or account information are lost or stolen, contact the credit reporting companies and place a fraud alert on your credit file. Check your bank statements and other financial account documents for unusual activity. Make sure you always secure your personal computer by keeping your security software up to date, and limit access to your wireless network with encryption and strong passwords.

And by all means, don’t click on any links or reply to emails or pop-up messages that ask for your personal or financial information. Legitimate businesses don’t ask you to send sensitive information through insecure channels. And never, ever connect to a bank or other sensitive accounts over public Wi-Fi. In fact, pull out your smartphone right this minute and disable the Wi-Fi function, so it does not pick up a signal automatically.

Determined identity thieves are hard to stop, but if you follow these suggestions, you’ll improve your chances of keeping your personal information secure. And for extra security, here’s how GEICO can help protect your identity.

Major Corporations Team Up to Support Small Businesses Across the U.S. with Free Online Resource Website

Allstate, Capital One, LegalZoom, Microsoft, Office Depot and Web.com Collaborate to Launch the Small Business Connection Website
This release contains: 1 Photo, 1 Video, 1 Related Document

In an unprecedented collaboration, Allstate, Capital One, LegalZoom, Microsoft, Office Depot, Inc. and Web.com have joined forces to create Small Business Connection (http://ift.tt/1DZTQS1), a free online resource hub built to empower small business owners by addressing and helping to solve their critical business issues.

This is the first partnership of its kind, made up of leading companies from the banking, insurance, legal, office supply, internet marketing and technology sectors. The variety of industries represented will help provide small business owners – from those just starting out to established owners – with access to a broad base of knowledge and advice, all without a sales pitch.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our nation. They face the same challenges as large companies yet have a fraction of the resources. Small Business Connection sets out to change that,” said Mike Barton, president of Allstate Business Insurance and chairman of the Small Business Connection Board of Governors. “This resource hub will provide the 28 million small businesses in the U.S. with knowledge, insight, ideas and guidance from some of the most innovative companies around.”

According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses make up nearly 50 percent of private-sector payroll, representing more than 28 million companies. Nearly half of all new establishments survive five years or more and about one-third of new businesses survive 10 years or more.

Small Business Connection is a freely accessible web portal that features valuable information and thought leadership to assist with many aspects of running a small business, including:

  • Commercial and employee benefits solutions to help protect small businesses (provided by Allstate Business Insurance and Allstate Benefits)
  • Cash flow management and financial education resources to help small businesses manage their finances more effectively (provided by Capital One)
  • Modern legal solutions to help small business owners as they start and grow their business (provided by LegalZoom)
  • Helping small businesses realize their full potential through the use of technology (provided by Microsoft)
  • Thousands of products, helpful services and award-winning customer service, to help your business reach peak performance (provided by Office Depot, Inc.)
  • Internet services and online marketing solutions for small businesses (provided by Web.com)

“Allstate Business Insurance and Allstate Benefits are leaders in supporting small businesses because the corporation is a network of 10,000 small businesses,” continued Barton. “We are excited to bring some of the nation’s leading brands together to help small businesses grow, succeed and thrive in the ever-changing economy.”

“Allstate Benefits began as a small business, so we understand the unique challenges and opportunities of that marketplace,” said Greg Guidos, president of Allstate Benefits. “Today, more than 20,000 small businesses across the U.S. place their trust in Allstate Benefits to provide voluntary benefits solutions. As part of the Small Business Connection team, we hope to bring our solutions to even more employers, helping them provide financial protection to their most valuable asset – their employees.”

“Small businesses fuel job growth and innovation, and enrich the communities we live, work and play in – but many lack the resources needed to compete and grow,” said Keri Gohman, Capital One’s Head of Small Business Banking. “As a founder-led company, Capital One has a deep appreciation for what it takes to establish and grow a business, and we’re proud to partner on this initiative to empower local businesses and entrepreneurs with quality insights and guidance to help them succeed.”

“Business owners often make decisions on issues they are facing for the first time.  We are excited to join this collaboration to share insights, observations, or guidance to help them make the right choice for their business.” said John Suh, CEO of LegalZoom

“The collective economic impact of small businesses is unquestioned, and Microsoft is committed to continuing to help these businesses grow and thrive,” said Alex Fong, Sr. Director of Business Development at Microsoft. “The content provided through the Small Business Connection hub will give small businesses guidance on realizing the impact of technology, the importance of security and the opportunity to leverage enterprise capabilities to better collaborate and enhance productivity.”

“Small Business Connection will provide a broad base of knowledge that will help small businesses with expert, unbiased business advice for managing and growing a business,” said Steve Calkins, executive vice president, business solutions division for Office Depot, Inc. “We are proud to be a part of this worthy endeavor.”

“Like Web.com, the Small Business Connection is committed to helping small businesses succeed in every way possible,” said Scott Helfrich, senior vice president, business development for Web.com. “The combined knowledge among the partner companies, shared over a Web.com platform, provides small businesses incredible tools they would not otherwise have in one place.”

Allstate Insurance Company to Offer Free Educational Guide in Spanish to Latinas Affected by Breast Cancer

Latina Public Figure, Host and Actress Adamari Lopez to serve as national spokesperson for “Rayo de esperanza: Manual de apoyo para enfrentar el cáncer de seno,” based on the bestselling book, “The Silver Lining” by Hollye Jacobs, RN, MS, MSW
This release contains: 1 Photo, 1 Video, 2 Related Documents

Allstate Insurance Company today announced that it will provide a Spanish-language version of “The Silver Lining Companion Guide” free to any Latina in the U.S. affected by breast cancer. The guide is a condensed version of the New York Times bestselling book, “The Silver Lining: A Supportive and Insightful Guide to Breast Cancer,” by Hollye Jacobs, RN, MS, MSW, author, nurse and breast cancer survivor and photographer Elizabeth Messina. The companion guide was specially created to provide important information, practical tips and inspiration for those navigating through every stage of treatment and recovery.

To assist in promoting the guide to the Latina community, TV host and actress, Adamari Lopez, will serve as the national spokesperson. Lopez was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and has been cancer-free since 2006. Since then, she is very active in raising breast cancer awareness in the Latina community.

“‘Rayo de Esperanza’ by Hollye Jacobs is a very valuable tool that offers helpful information for those diagnosed with breast cancer, as well as for their family and friends,” said Adamari Lopez. “As a breast cancer survivor, I am honored to have the opportunity to participate in this initiative in partnership with Allstate and Hollye, and I am grateful to have overcome the disease and to be able to help others.  While the cancer road is difficult to travel, with faith, a positive attitude and this immensely useful Spanish guide, it is my hope that Latina women’s paths will be made easier,” added Lopez.

The Spanish guide, entitled “Rayo de esperanza: Manual de apoyo para enfrentar el cancer de seno,” was translated from the original English language version, and will be available starting May 10 to coincide with National Women’s Health Week. This commemorative week is a national effort by an alliance of government, community and business organizations to raise awareness about manageable steps women can take to improve their health. Printed copies of the guide will be available through a partnership with Telemundo, participating healthcare providers, Cancer Support Community, Latino community organizations throughout the country, as well as by digital download at http://ift.tt/1F1Iekc.

“In the United States, more than 250,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Breast cancer is the most common cancer and leading cause of cancer death among Latina women,” said Hollye Jacobs, RN, MS, MSN. “It is for these reasons that it is incredibly important to provide valuable, culturally sensitive and accessible information, support and guidance to the Latina community, written in Spanish. Thanks to the generosity of Allstate Insurance, sharing 'Rayo de Esperanza: Manual de Apoyo para Enfrentar el Cáncer de Seno’ is an incredible and unique opportunity to reach the Latina community in a way that has never been done before.”

“The wellbeing of women is an important priority for Allstate and providing this free resource to our customers and community gives me great pride,” said Beatriz Zaragoza, a Latina Allstate agency owner. “The Silver Lining Companion Guide will not only aide women and their families in communities across the U.S., but Allstate also hopes it brings the important issue of women’s wellbeing among Latinas to the forefront.”

According to the Office on Women’s Health (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Latinas. Latinas are more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage, when the cancer is more advanced and harder to treat. Access to health care and information is one reason for this heath disparity.

For more information on the guide and how to obtain a copy, please visit www.thesilverpen.com or http://ift.tt/1F1Iekc.

Allstate Brings Motorcycle App to Apple Watch™

Riders can log their rides through just their watch while on the road.
This release contains: 1 Photo, 1 Related Document

As more and more people add an Apple WatchTM to their collection of connected devices, Allstate introduces a new feature for its GoodRide® app that helps motorcycle riders log their rides on the new watch.

GoodRide® by Allstate gives riders an easy-to-use start/stop feature, so it’s easier than ever to log a ride from the road, all on a rider’s wrist with the Apple Watch.

“We saw this as a great opportunity to showcase some of the innovation we do on behalf of our customers,” says Allstate’s Senior Director of Consumer Engagement Roger Tye. “We live in a hyper-connected society today and the Apple Watch innovation will make GoodRide even easier for riders to use when they are on the road.”

The overall GoodRide app has been available for smartphones through the Apple iTunes store or GooglePlay since 2011. The full version helps track miles and routes, and users can share it all on social networks. It helps riders plan every trip and store every repair so they get the most out of each ride.

To date, riders using the app have logged more than 50,000 rides accounting for more than 8 million miles on the road.

Starting this week, Allstate embarks on a Ride for Awareness where a seasoned rider will travel through all 50 states on a motorcycle to spread awareness about the vital role motorists play in protecting motorcycle riders. He will be wearing an Apple Watch with the GoodRide app installed.

For more information about the GoodRide app, please visit: http://ift.tt/1KJfQEL.

Motorcyclist Embarks on Cross Country Ride for Awareness

Allstate Insurance is sponsoring Nate Hudson’s ride as he visits all 50 state capitals and logs more than 17,000 miles to generate awareness for motorcycle safety.

To spread awareness about the vital role motorists play in helping to protect motorcycle riders, Allstate Insurance Company announced plans today to sponsor a motorcyclist’s journey across the country on the first-ever “Ride for Awareness."  Kicking off May 12, in conjunction with Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, the road trip crosses all 50 states and encourages motorcycle safety and awareness.

Based on data obtained from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, three motorcyclists are killed in multi-vehicle crashes at intersections each day. This is why it is crucial to educate motorists on the importance of watching out for motorcycles. This startling statistic was the inspiration for the Allstate Rider Protection Project, which is a series of programs and resources created to help keep riders safe while riding.

The Ride for Awareness will pass through each state capital, visiting the corresponding Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) headquarters to hand-deliver a proposal on behalf of Allstate. The proposal will request that a question highlighting the importance of sharing the road with motorcycle riders be included in each state’s driver education curriculum and test required to obtain a driver’s license.

"Allstate takes its commitment to motorcycle safety very seriously, as demonstrated by the countless safety efforts we’ve spearheaded on behalf of the riding community over the years,” said David Foster, director of specialty product lines for Allstate Insurance Company. “The ‘Ride for Awareness’ is the perfect way to not only ensure that this important message of motorcycle safety is being heard in as many places as possible, but to also create a lasting impact on current and future motorists.”

To complete this important mission, Allstate is sponsoring long-time motorcycle rider and fellow biker safety advocate Nate Hudson. Hudson has more than 20 years of riding experience, and is also co-owner of the British-American Motorcycle Club, a service shop and riding club with an emphasis on vintage and custom bikes.

“When Allstate approached me with the idea for the 'Ride for Awareness,’ I knew it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. As a motorcycle enthusiast and long-time rider myself, motorcycle safety is incredibly important to me,” said Hudson. “I can’t wait to witness the effect that this campaign will have across the entire country. It’s going to be an amazing journey.”

Hudson has logged over 200,000 miles since his first ride at age 16, and is about to log 17,000 more on Allstate’s “Ride for Awareness.” Nate is making the 17,000 mile trek with a custom 2015 Indian Roadmaster tailored for Allstate. The bike is built for long-distance riding and has a strong engine ready for hitting all 50 states along the way.

Hudson will be documenting his journey via multiple online and social channels, including the Allstate Rider News blog, Allstate Motorcycle Facebook Page/Rider Risk map, Allstate GoodRide App, Allstate.com/ride and @BA_Moto. Allstate encourages everyone to follow along and see how this important safety mission unfolds.

New biker or not, make safety your top priority

Cycle Safety Gear‘Tis the season for cycles! As a rider, I find this time of year exciting and scary at the same time. Each motorcycle season brings out new riders who are eager to hit the road but ill-prepared to handle the challenges of operating a motorcycle safely. Unfortunately, many of the first-time riders that are involved in accidents are riding bikes that are not a good fit.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. I always ask other riders if they have taken a safety course. I don’t care if you are Evel Knievel, you can’t have too much training when it comes to riding a motorcycle. A motorcycle safety course will help you hone your skills and sharpen your riding techniques and strategies.

My motorcycle group had an unwritten rule that we lived by. We would always let any new rider that didn’t think a safety course was important go ahead of us, and meet them at the next destination. We didn’t want to take the chance that a rookie rider in our group would do something that endangered the rest of us.

We had a similar unwritten rule for anyone who didn’t want to ride with a helmet or the proper gear. Believe me when I tell you that a helmet is a motorcycle rider’s best friend. It’s the most important piece of safety equipment a motorcyclist can have.

Helmets protect you against all types of potential risks when you are on the road and increase your chance of surviving a crash, so it was always common sense for me. Plus, it is the law in many states. I could never understand why anyone wouldn’t want something that not only protects your noggin from injury, but also cuts down on wind noise, shields your face and eyes, and keeps those not-too-tasty bugs out of your mouth.

Protective gear such as leather clothing, boots with nonskid soles and gloves can protect your body and help minimize your injuries in case of an accident or a skid. Consider attaching reflective tape to your clothing to make it easier for other drivers to see you.

Enjoy the open road, and be safe out there!

This week is National Women’s Health Week and a nationwide call is underway to empower women with knowledge to take control of their health and encourage each other along the way. Continuing their commitment to the wellbeing of women, Allstate and bestselling author Hollye Jacobs are releasing a new free Spanish version of “The Silver Lining Companion Guide” in addition to a free English version available nationwide.

The companion guide is a condensed version of Jacob’s New York Times bestselling book “The Silver Lining: A supportive and Insightful Guide to Breast Cancer,” and includes practical tips, important information and inspiration for those undergoing breast cancer. Every year, approximately 250,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed.

“Allstate is dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of women across the country,” said Stacy Sharpe, senior vice president of corporate relations, at Allstate Insurance Company. “It is Allstate’s hope, and the hope of our agency owners across the country who have volunteered to distribute the guide, that it will prove to be a source of comfort, knowledge and inspiration to all who read it.”

The Spanish companion guide, “Rayo de esperanza: Manual de apoyo para enfrentar el cancer de seno,” was translated from the original English language version to resonate with the Latina community. To launch the new Spanish version, Allstate and Jacobs have joined forces with host of Telemundo’s “Un Nuevo Día” and breast cancer survivor Adamari Lopez. This is the first of its kind Spanish-language resource and will debut later this week (Thursday, May 14) at White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles.

“Sharing advice and support through the partnership with Allstate and its agencies with ‘The Silver Lining Companion Guide’ is an incredible and unique opportunity to reach everyone impacted by breast cancer,” said Hollye Jacobs, RN, MS, MSW. “I wish I had this guide when I was going through my breast cancer experience. The absence of this resource is what inspired me to write the book and to ultimately support the health and wellbeing of all women, especially those who are going through the most challenging of life circumstances.”

The free companion guide is available for download or for pick up at participating distribution centers and select Allstate agencies nationwide. Download or find the nearest participating distribution center at http://ift.tt/1sOIpMA.

TD Ameritrade Discloses Resignation of Ed Clark from Board of Directors

TD Ameritrade’s Investor Movement Index: New Two-Year Low Marks Fifth Month of Decline in Seven Months

Three things beginning bikers need to know

Cycle SafetyOne of the biggest challenges I see with new riders is that they often buy too much bike. If you are in the market for a bike, please consider the size and performance of the bike when deciding which bike is best for you. There are so many different body types, engine sizes and performance features available. It can leave the most experienced motorcycle rider a bit overwhelmed.

The first thing you need to decide is what type of bike do you want? Will you be on the highway or off-road? Do you plan to take long-distance trips or stay on local streets? Your answers will help you decide the type of motorcycle that’s best for you.

Secondly, understand that engine size will be one of your biggest decisions when choosing any new bike. Don’t make the mistake of purchasing a powerful motorcycle that is way beyond your riding skill-set. Motorcycle engine sizes are measured in cubic centimeters or “cc” for short, ranging from 50 cc to more than 2,000 cc. Bigger engines produce more power and go much faster. Beginner riders should start with a smaller engine size. Once you’ve gained riding experience and confidence, you will know when the time is right to move to another bike that may offer more performance and power.

And lastly, a motorcycle’s weight and seat height are two other key factors that even experienced riders must consider. You should be able to sit on a motorcycle comfortably with both feet planted firmly on the ground. That stability gives you better control of the bike if it starts to lean over. Your bike should not be so heavy that you can’t keep it safely balanced. Before buying, you should sit on a variety of motorcycles to test your comfort level.

For additional resources on motorcycle safety, please check out a safety video from AMA Daytona Sportbike Champion Martin Cardenas. For more information, please visit http://ift.tt/1IG6qLv.

GEICO recognizes teens for drug and alcohol prevention programs

GSA GFBy guest blogger Christine Tasher

Fueled by lots of teenage energy and exuberance, award ceremonies took place in several Maryland and Virginia high schools last week when GEICO recognized students’ efforts to promote good decisions – on the road, on dates, at school and in the community.

Working with the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP), GEICO provided $1,000 awards to five student groups to help them continue their work on drug/alcohol prevention efforts.

Winners of the 23rd annual GEICO Student Awards:

  • GSA HCAcademy of the Holy Cross, SADD Group, Kensington, Maryland
  • Eleanor Roosevelt High School, SADD Club, Greenbelt, Maryland
  • Gar-Field Senior High School, SADD Club, Woodbridge, Virginia
  • T.C. Williams High School, Above the Influence Club, Alexandria, Virginia
  • Unified Prevention Coalition Youth Council, Fairfax County, Virginia (will receive award June 8)

Student groups are judged on their leadership, effectiveness, innovation and involvement of both the student body and community in their efforts to prevent underage drinking.

Winning groups have implemented a variety of awareness initiatives including: signing pledges to refrain from alcohol and drug use during prom season; actively using social media to promote healthy lifestyles; organizing alcohol-free teen social events; and hosting re-enactments demonstrating the devastating effects of alcohol.
